Chapter Thirteen
Bright and early Friday morning, Shelly pulled into the parking lot of the Graff hotel, her nerves buzzed as though she’d been tazed. Turning to Tia and Freddie, she asked, “How do I look?”
“What do you mean, how do you look? You look fine.” Freddie yawned before taking a swig of his his large Java Café tumbler. “It’s too early. Why are we here again?”
“Ugh, Son, you’re no help.” She checked her eyeliner again, glad it hadn’t run or smudged since this last time she looked, which was all of five minutes ago.
“You look beautiful, Aunt Shell.” Tia unbuckled her seat belt, grabbed her camera, and zipped up her coat. “I’ll come with you. I want to see the trees in the lobby. Take some pictures.”
“Are we seriously going to entertain little kids all day?” Freddie’s voice held just the hint of a whine.
“Yes, because we want to get a tree and they can’t put one up in their room so I invited them to come with us.” Popping the lock, she tried not to run inside as though she’d appear anxious and far too excited.
“Two days ago, you said you didn’t want to mess with a tree, Mom.” Freddie followed them.
“I changed my mind.” She wrung her hands nervously, then shook them out.
“They have trees all over the place in here. Can’t they use one of those?”
“Would you have been happy with that answer when you were nine?”
He grunted and stuffed his hands in his coat pockets as the automatic doors opened.
Entering the Graff, they were immediately greeted with the smells of evergreen and sugar cookies. Thick green garland wrapped around rails of the grand staircase that curved toward the second floor as ribbons of red were perfectly positioned at each base of the staircase lights.
Several large trees sat in the curve of the staircase, across from the front desk, where the attendant waved them over.
His colorful snowman-themed sweater vest matched his deep green button-down shirt. “Good morning. How can I help you today?”
“It’s beautiful in here.”
“Thank you. It’s my favorite time of year.” As they approached the desk, he tapped a bowl in front of him full of brightly wrapped treats. “Raspberry candies if you want one.”
Shelly eyed his nametag as Freddie and Tia both grabbed a sweet. “Thank you, Bob. We’re looking for Peter Davidson’s room.”
His fingers sailed across the keyboard as the lights overhead shone off his partially bald head. “Your name?”
“Shelly Westbrook. These are my kids. Freddie and Tia.”
“Pleased to meet you.” His eyes settled on Tia’s camera for a moment. “Look around. Take all the pictures you like.”
“Thanks, Mr. Bob.” Tia took the lens cap off and tucked it in her pocket before snapping a photo of him. “Smile, sir.”
He grinned, even blushed a bit as Tia took several shots in a row.
“Check it out, Mom.” Freddie’s excited voice boomed across the lobby. “This tree has a bunch of book ideas.”
It always amazed her how labile teenage emotions were. Her son went from
